Self care with yoga

Before I discovered yoga I was depressed, anxious, disconnected from my body and felt like I was lacking a purpose. I randomly drove past a yoga studio offering a new student discount and something sparked in me to try it. Having done yoga a few times before I went to this class and my entire life completely changed in that one class- I’m not kidding. (We call this experience a rebirth). In that 60 minute class I for the first time truly experienced what it was like to be present and to connect my mind to my body which then led me on a long journey of self care and life transformation. My practice started on the mat like many others, but my journey has taken me far off the mat in ways I could have never even imagined.

WHAT IS SELF CARE?

There are many different forms of self care from social, emotional, physical, etc. But for the purpose of this blog I’m breaking it into 2 categories. The embodied and the disciplined. The embodied is your embodiment, breathing, movement, intuitive, massages all of that which we commonly know. Then the disciplined is setting boundaries, breaking toxic habits, recognizing patterns, committing to your promises you make to yourself, building internal trust and so on. The yoga practice itself incorporates all the forms of self care in such a balanced way where you can actually practice it all together and let it flow.

5 Steps to Self Care through Yoga

  1. Cleanse: Both your external environment and internal environment. An external cleanse is more than just a declutter to your physical space. While that is part of the process there is more to it. It involves checking in with your beliefs and understanding where these beliefs come from. Are they even your beliefs or are they someone else’s beliefs getting pressed onto you? Which then leads into the internal cleanse. Cleaning out beliefs that no longer serve us and also becoming aware of what we consume into the body both physically and mentally. Choosing a diet that fits your body while also becoming aware of toxic thinking patterns and thoughts. Combining the two together is the first step to cleansing the body and mind.

  2. Contentment- Gratitude practice. Gratitude is already such a big part of self care and a popular practice. But instead of just talking about it and writing it down in your journal- make sure you really embody the practice. Close your eyes and feel the gratitude flow and move through your body. Actively practice this during the day, make your gratitude practice more than just a daily journal prompt- let it be something that you just embody as you go about your day.

  3. Self Discipline- The truth is we live in a society that emphasizes the glory and the grand escapes of traveling and living for these really intense experiences. But what we often forget to realize is that a lot of these moments are created through a pretty boring routine that’s CONSISTENT. Create your daily routine and actually stick to it. Part of being able to stick to this is being real with yourself and realistic of what you can handle on a daily basis. Actually commit to the goals you set for yourself, and see. it. out. Stop breaking promises you make to yourself because while others may not know your subconscious knows. So when we sit here and say “I don’t trust myself” it’s likely because we’ve broken promises to ourself before- so yes of course there is a lack of trust. To have that healthy relationship to yourself- be disciplined.

  4. Self Study- Time of deep reflection. This includes a lot of the journaling and meditation practices you will read about on every other self care blog. They all serve a purpose. This is a time to start understanding your needs, your patterns, your preferences, and triggers developing a deeper connection with yourself.

  5. Surrender- Let go of what you can’t control and trust that it will workout the way it’s supposed to. You’ve done the work from your end and have taken accountability for what your responsibilities, but there are just some things we cannot control and we have to find trust. This is a powerful practice that really allows us to create an internal peace and self acceptance and trust in our process and journey.
